If there’s inflation, then why has the U.S. dollar been strengthening against other currencies?

There’s no shortage of people who are confused about why the U.S. dollar has been gaining in value (against other currencies); that’s been my experience, for what it’s worth. If U.S. citizens are losing purchasing power, then why is the dollar gaining strength in the foreign exchange market?
