The Ledger Nano S was created by a French company called Ledger. It commenced operations in 2014, through the fusion of ideas between 8 experts with extensive knowledge of security and Cryptocurrencies.
Ledger, since its launch in 2014 has been committed to providing secure technology for Cryptocurrencies via its unique technology called BOLOS. The company’s track record has been commendable, hence the reason for the success and popularity they have garnered so far.
Now, let’s go on to compare both wallets’ basic features.
Nano S
Cost: $59
KeepKey
Cost: $49
We shall be comparing them based on the following;
- Price
- Security
- Supported coins
- Size and design
- Screen
- Setup
- Software compatibility
The first thing on every rational buyer’s mind is the price of a product. Therefore, it is only logical that we start this comparative analysis from the price category.
Keepkey recently Reduced its price to $49 in a bid to attract more buyers, making it one of the cheapest hardware wallets so far.
While the Nano S is sold at $59. That’s a $10 difference, in this category, the Keepkey will be the preferred option if you are running a strict budget.
Both wallets come with similar security features. However, the difference lies in the fact that the Keepkey is basically a small computer while the Nano S uses a dual-chip architecture.
The hardware wallets can be safely used on any computer, as they are both fully immune to virus and malware attacks.
The essence of acquiring any wallet in the first place is to store your cryptocurrencies. So, the number of coins supported by any given wallet is a vital factor in choosing which one is ideal for you.
Keepkey Coin Support
The Keepkey currently supports up to 40 digital assets including 46 ERC20 tokens. Below is a list of the major coins supported.
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Litecoin (LTC)
- DASH (DASH)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Ethereum Classic (ETC)
- Namecoin (NMC)
- Dogecoin (DOGE) etc…..
The device does not support Ripple, which has grown to be a highly sort after coin in the crypto-verse
Ledger Nano S Coin Support
Nano S currently supports 1000+ digital assets including Ripple and ERC20 tokens, that’s way more than that of the Keepkey.
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Bitcoin cash (BCH)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Ethereum Classic (ETC)
- Dogecoin (DOGE)
- Litecoin (LTC)
- Dash (DASH)
- Ripple (XRP)
- Zcash (ZEC) etc….
You can argue that a hardware wallet’s outward appearance doesn’t matter, all that matters is its security. However, moving around with an iPhone 4s, for example, is far more convenient than moving around with a brick in your pocket.
The Ledger device is smaller than the KeepKey. if you’d like a more portable device the Nano S wins in this category.
Furthermore, the KeepKey device is beautifully designed with an aluminium glass and has just one physical button. The Nano S is made of aluminium and has two physical buttons by the side.
If you are a fan of ‘style’, you should go for the KeepKey.
The Nano S is available in 5 different colours giving you varieties to choose from, (Matte Black, Saffron Yellow, Lagoon Blue, Flamingo Pink, and Jade Green). While the Keepkey is only available in one colour (Classic)
However, I think security is all that matters.
Anyone who uses a hardware wallet will confirm that the screen is a vital component of the device. It displays sensitive information like backup seeds, PIN codes, and private keys.
The most quality hardware wallets come with built-in display screens, and that includes our beloved KeepKey and Nano S.
The Nano S has an OLED screen that gives its users full control over their transactions, KeepKey, on the other hand, comes with a larger touchscreen that looks clearer and displays more data. I will pick the Keepkey screen over the Nano S even though it makes the device bulkier.

Setting up both devices is quite easy and won’t last you up to 5mins. You will need to connect them to a computer, set your PIN, and write down your recovery seed.
Read my reviews on both wallets, I gave a step by step guide on how to set up your wallets.`
Software’s are essential to all hardware wallets, it is impossible to use a hardware wallet independently without software as they serve to interact and command the wallet. I shall list the most prominent wallet software below and their compatibility with our contesting hardware wallets.
